Centralia, PA
Founded in 1866, Centralia was once a thriving community, reaching a population of over 2,500 people by the mid-1960s, before an underground coal fire brought ruin to the town. Today, more than 46 years after the fire started, fewer than a dozen residents remain, and the fire continues to burn, leaving an almost empty grid of streets and sidewalks, and smoke and steam can be seen rising from the ground.
